Designer

Lisa Hilland creates contemporary design with a poetic twist, combining modern high-tech production techniques with artisan quality craftsmanship. After graduating from Central St Martin's College of Art and Design, she worked ten years as a designer in London before setting up her own studio in Sweden in 2005.

“As a designer I have a great love of materials and how they influence how we perceive an object. I am constantly experimenting with the qualities of materials, making use of them in new combinations. Excellent design triggers our emotions and according to me, materials have a great part to play while designing - or as I call it - giving an object a soul that can be loved.”

“The starting point for a project can be solving a challenge of practical or emotional nature, or simply exploring a technique of manufacture or crafts that fascinates me. I aim to create items that are sensitive to human emotions and needs and I always push my clients to consider the environment as far as they possibly can. Therefore I am deeply involved in every project, you often find me on the factory floor looking for more beautiful, eco-friendlier and smarter solutions.

The creative process itself is another inspiration and the state of mind I'm in when working. Each project has its own unique progress, as important to me as the finished result. Product Story

Designer Lisa Hilland dreamt of creating furniture that combined both of her interests – fashion and design – in a self-evident manner. After a great deal of thought she came up with the Torso chair designed for Design House Stockholm.

Lisa Hilland’s Torso is the chair, which like a bare torso, can be dressed. For 2018 she has expanded the collection with a barstool and a lounge chair. The woven leather back is inspired by the traditional hunter chair and gently flirts with Swedish craft traditions. The chairs are modest in their expression yet they are visually striking with their woven leather detailing.

Lisa Hilland puts a lot of value to the fact that Torso is produced in Sweden as she prefers the environmental aspects as well as the hands-on quality control of locally produced design. She can often be seen on the factory floor searching for eco-friendly solutions to enhance the project. The new additions are dressed for the party and you’ll find them in sophisticated bars and salons. You might say that Torso family are the lobster and champagne of chairs.

The Torso framework and leather back are produced in Sweden. The combination of hi-tech and lo-tech, framework and attire, creates a notable dynamic. This is a design that suits the home just as well as the public sector.
